Dominican
Republic Mission
Trip—2010
The Dominican Republic St. Andrews mission trip is on
again for 2010.
Airline reservations have been made on American Airlines for
Saturday October 23rd, leaving Omaha and returning
Sunday October 31st. Missionaries Bob and Ellen Snow have been
given questions about what our mission will do and what our cost will
entail. Fund raising has been going on
throughout 2009. More funds will be needed
for the trip. As we have done in the
past, we need to raise money to pay for food on the job, for transportation to
and from the airport, to and from the job site,
building materials to work with on the job, ($250.00) per person going
on the trip. All of these funds have to be sent in advance to the D.R. Our fund raising will pay for these expenses.
I estimate our personal costs for the trip to
approximately $1,500.00. This includes
air fare, hotels at three different locations, food in Santo Domingo, and a Resort on Friday and
Saturday on the water, before leaving
the D.R. This is our 4th mission trip to the D.R., one in 2001, 2005 and 2007. This commitment is a life changing one for
sure.

Pine Ridge Update - - -
Clothing Drive
During the month of October ‘09,
I organized a clothing drive for the Pine Ridge kids. There was an infant crib located in Engle
Hall used to collect primarily clothes for infants. The response was overwhelming. Your donations went way past what I was
prepared for. My wife Jean, my mom Peg,
and I sorted clothes into 50 tote boxes by size and gender. The clothing primarily was for
infants-to-preteens but also included 5 or so boxes for adults. We also had boxes of video movies (200 or more) and video players. These all were nice quality items, some with
store tags still attached, and some special hand made items as well. A
cargo trailer was used to transport it all.
The weekend of November 7,
Wayne Culp, Roger Rowe, (members of St Andrew’s) John Hage (of BSA Troop 405) and myself left Omaha Saturday Morning for
Gordon Nebraska. Jim Moon of St. Mark’s put us up for the
night and made breakfast for us. Sunday morning. We headed up to Kyle, SD to
the Church of the Mediator where we met with Rev. Cordeila Red Owl and Wilbur
Red Owl. Our goods were unloaded and set
up on tables for all to see. The
donations were well received and appreciated.
They were very excited about the
large selection and quality. (Usually they have to settle for 2nd rate hand me downs). The Bible
asks us to share our abundance with those in need. Our mission was a success.
The four of us got to share an Episcopal service including, readings,
hymns, communion, sermon, Cordelia
(Celebrant) with Native Americans at their church. Much of the service was done in their native
Lakotan language. As guests we felt
truly honored to attend.
We sincerely thank all that supported this effort. We appreciated the opportunity to extend your
givings and spiritual thoughts for our friends of the Pine Ridge Community.
Thank-you, God’s Blessings Keith Gourley

Education
In Godly Play, Lent is described as a time to get ready
to enter the mystery that is Easter. We are given a lot of time because the
mystery is so great. This Lent; I challenge you to take some time to get ready
for the mystery of Easter by making pretzels with your family. Pretzels? Yes,
think of the shape of a pretzel, hands crossed over the chest or heart. During Lent,
we take time to reflect and pray, possibly in this pose. The pretzel recipe
isn’t hard, and of course your children can roll the dough into other symbols
like a cross or a dove. Once you have made the pretzels, think of someone you
could share them with. Another idea is to make the pretzels in silence and
meditation- can your family communicate in other ways?
Pretzel recipe:
1 packet yeast
1 ½ cup warm water
1tsp salt
1 T sugar
4 ½ cups flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water and sugar for five
minutes. Add salt and flour to yeast mixture. Knead dough about 7-8 minutes.
Let stand until doubled. Divide into 32 pieces. Roll into pretzel shapes. Brush
with egg and coarse salt. Cook 10 minutes at 475.
Peace,
~Rebecca

Winter Donations
We are taking
winter clothes and will be happy to take your "gently used" winter
clothing on donation and consignment. However, as a reminder:
PLEASE bring us clothing that is saleable! If you would not buy the item
you plan to donate or consign at a resale shop, then no one else will buy it
either. CLOTHES MUST BE CLEAN, NO SPOTS OR TEARS, NO PET HAIR, AND
PREFERABLY ON HANGERS OR FOLDED NEATLY (not thrown in a bag in a jumble!
If it is not wearable and is worn, we can't use it either. Please put it
in your own trash can or take to the Salvation Army or Goodwill to be sold as
poundage. Thank you very much for help and support!
Our name is the
"NEARLY NEW SHOP" and we work very hard to keep our quality and
cleanliness top-notch. Our goal is to make money for our church's
outreach programs and ECW programs. We can't make the money we need if we
don't have clean, quality clothing and knick-knacks to sell!
In His love,
Jan Buhr, Nearly New Shop Manager

seniors and their families as they plan for future care needs in the home or
elsewhere.
Rita Murphy has volunteered
to provide information and referrals regarding in-home assistance or
alternative living arrangements. Rita has considerable experience
in community resource referral and has practiced for several years as a
Certified Master Social Worker (CMSW) and Licensed Mental Health Practitioner
(LMHP). A private appointment can be arranged by contacting Rita at
