Christ’s work is done. The spectacle of the executioners is over. They start their cleanup. The work of Mary has just begun. We look upon her holding the lifeless body of our Lord. The price of her reply to the angel all those years ago, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” bears down on her. She shifts our tattered Jesus closer to her heart. He gave us everything.
Amen, amen I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. John 12:24-25
