We meet Jesus on the road with Veronica. He is very nearly blind and unrecognizable. Layers of blood, spittle, dirt, and filth obscure his loving face from our view. Veronica offers him her own veil in compassion and mercy. He wipes his face and imparts his likeness onto the cloth. Small acts of mercy are magnified in God’s eyes. When we give with no expectation of return, unexpected miracles come back to us. This veil has been handed down through the millennia, and now resides in the Matilda Chapel. The relic is exposed for viewing on the fifth Sunday of Lent.
“Come” Says my heart, “seek his face”; your face O Lord, do I seek! Do not hide your face from me. Psalm 27: 8-9
