I show a woman, a child, and a pregnant mother. Christ reaches out to them.
We greet Jesus among the Women of Jerusalem. We stand in mourning and compassion. We look at his pitiable visage. We cannot understand the meaning of this catastrophe. He is walking to his own destruction. We are lost as well. Lovingly Jesus tells us to trust in Him and his Father’s greater plan. It is one that we cannot yet see or comprehend. The concern should be to gather their wayward children and ours. Many have fallen idle into earthly pursuits. Sheep who wander aimlessly fall to predation. Only by following close to the Shepherd can they be guided from rocky cliffs into a safe pasture. Let us too heed this call to trust in God’s will beyond our own fear confusion and willful abandon. We keep sight of the Good Shepherd and help guide our children back into the flock.
But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but for yourselves and your children.” Luke 23:28
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophet and stone those sent to you. How I wanted to gather your children unto myself like the hen collects her brood under her wing. But you would not allow it. Luke 13:34
